Newport, Rhode Island is the second kind. I know, because I grew up here, and I have spent my whole life watching people arrive as visitors and leave as something closer to devotees. There is something about this city, the cobblestones, the harbor light, the four centuries of history layered quietly beneath your feet, that does that to people. 
This website is my way of sharing what I know. Not just the famous things, though the mansions and the Cliff Walk and the Jazz Festival absolutely deserve their reputations. But the Newport that exists just beneath the surface of the obvious one. The neighborhoods that feel unchanged since the colonial era. The restaurants where locals actually eat. The water, always the water, and what it feels like to be out on it on a good sailing day with the wind behind you and the harbor opening up ahead. 
I was born into a Newport family with roots on Aquidneck Island going back to 1796, worked as a launch driver in this harbor when I was young, and have been photographing this city for years with a camera and a deep appreciation for its light.
